Her damn B string wouldn't tune. Completely normal for her guitar. She just made everything else just as sharp, and thought it was a bonus that it'd piss off anyone with perfect pitch. Benny's set was wrapping up, and Nicole would be next on the small stage of Rick's Cafe, playing for the same know-nothings that usually graced Rick's. She never felt nervous performing here. No one knew a damn thing about music. She did it for $100 and the free tea.

Benny was finished, so Nicole jumped onto the stage after he climbed down and just dove into a song. No introduction, no hesitation. She just strummed and sang. Lonely men built lonely cities. Her voice just sang.
