This sounds absolutely fascinating: The Olive Schreiner Letters Project, not just because Schreiner is a fascinating character and important feminist thinker, but for the theoretical and analytical stuff they're doing around letters, editing letters, publishing them, etc, and in a way that is exquisitely sensitive to the contingencies of survival and the various archival contexts in which they are found:
At its simplest, an epistolarium is someone’s surviving letters, those either still in private hands and/or publicly available in a specialised organisational context, such as a library or an archive. This surviving part of what was once something larger, the entire letters ever written by somebody, is fragmented because it is marked by ordinary attrition, by over time losses and destructions, and also there are likely to be gaps because of the failure of some letters to arrive with the intended addressee. But even confining thinking here to just those letters which are now extant, there are important analytical reverberations concerning by what means and with what consequences these particular letters have survived, how they have ended up where they are and in the state of whatever in/completeness they now have. The provenance (who sold or donated a set of letters so they ended up where they have and how they obtained them in the first place) of what survives is important here because this can tell the researcher and reader a good deal about networks of friendship and love, as is the impact of archival framing (how a surviving set of letters is organised and made available in an archival context) which structures and so influences how sets of letters are read. In addition, at a more submerged level the letters that survive and are extant inevitably influences thinking about that elusive whole, all those they ever wrote, although there is usually no means of knowing how typical or atypical the extant letters are in relation to this. Some Olive Schreiner examples will help explain these points by grounding them. This is very, very cool. (At least to my particular tastes.) ***
And on the erosions of time and memory, I was rather astonished to see this: Sylvia Plath's only play was originally broadcast on the radio, then published as a poem. Now... we can finally see it performed on the stage. Except, no, actually, I can well remember seeing a production of Three Women at the Old Red Lion Pub Theatre c. 1981.

But surely it should be Project Y?
Public
My Attention Has Been Drawn to this: Project X: Turns boys into real readers.
Is there not something very weird about naming something that is Truly boy-friendly in its content, design, structure, and teaching and learning approach - turns boys into readers and writer Project X, when there seems to be this assumption that it is the Y chromosome which has some particular repercussions leading to
specific challenges involved in ensuring some boys become readers. Boys are more likely than girls to struggle with reading and to give up on independent reading. Boys are also far more likely than girls to under perform in writing. And am I alone in finding this really rather creepy?
Project X is designed to engage all children with reading but as the greater number of 'disengaged' readers are boys we have focused our attentions on their needs. Why? Because engaged boys give teachers more time to ensure that every child in their class is being helped to progress. The aim of Project X is therefore to engage the boys to the benefit of both boys and girls.
In order to engage boy readers, the Project X books have been developed to appeal to the needs and tastes of boys. This is because in general boys have a narrower range of reading tastes than girls. Whilst most girls are happy to read action and adventure stories with male protagonists or books on topics such as dinosaurs, sports and animals, some boys are quickly turned off by stories 'about girls' or books that they consider 'for girls'. O teh poor boyzzz!! We must cater to them and their idiosyncrasies, and the gurlz will put up with it. Because boys, far more than girls, need to see a clear purpose for what they are doing. They won't simply do something because they are told to; they want to know what's in it for them. For some boys it is not that they can't, it is just that they can't be bothered. If boys are underperforming we must run in circles, scream and shout, and Do Something. But if it's girls, it is just the way their pink and feminine brains are made. And as they will naturally become competent readers we don't need to pay any attention to their requirements in that area.
Grrrr.

Urrrrgghhh: hectic feverish flush
Public
I think the reason I was feeling so particularly blah yesterday evening was that the cold was getting worse instead of better.
Rather bad night, and am definitely feverish this morning. Have had to try and cancel various stuff I was supposed to be doing today at unfortunately short notice.
Would go back to bed, but when I woke up I took sudafed for the raging sinus congestion...

I'm Jess, I'm 25 I hail from the States in a small Midwestern town. I love Degrassi: TNG, Degrassi: Old School, reading, V.C. Andrews, Pink, Alexz Johnson, Motley Crue, Cassie Steele, the color pink, punk music...fan fiction. I write a lot. I also love Sweet Valley High, and The Babysitter's Club books.
I'm here from Livejournal, just in case and I'm very, very new to this site. I'd like some new friends who comment. Please don't add me to just see your list grow, that sucks :(
I'm currently in lust with Jake Epstein and talk a lot about his work/past work. Most of my entries are about Degrassi lol. I like to role-play, too so if you do that, and it's fandom or original stuff, give me a hollar!

Hi, my name's Brianna and I'm 18 years old, I'm not new here, I moved here from GJ and I'm looking for friends. I like music, playing World of Warcraft, and just hanging out. I'm pretty laid back. If you're interested, add me. No drama please. <3

I hope that this lack of inspiration is purely a byproduct of a) having a cold (I think it's receding, but it's currently at the snuffle and drip stage) and b) being cold.
The effects on my little grey cells, I contend, from both factors, are deleterious.
Were I rather warmer and less snuffly I might be able to address the matter of the two reviews I did not get written over the break (remembrance of reading the works in question is receding rapidly over the horizon). Especially as I was solicited today to review Yet Another Book.
I've been well enough to go into work this week. But by the evening am feeling the blahs.
Sneeze, snuffle, cough, hack.

Today we lost power and all but the main database server came back up. After investigating we found out the the disk drives had gotten corrupted. We fixed them as best as we can but we'll be needing to purchase at least 2 new drives and very soon.
Thanks for your patience!!

I dunno if it's really post holidays, do people consider New Years/Eve part of the holidays?? I guess I do. I never do anything. Christmas was okay, I got a new WoW hoody to replace the one that I had which is got a buncha holes (I still love it and plan to wear it though). Not much else though, and I really don't care. I hate Christmas. I hate getting and giving presents. I attempt to make the day as regular as possible, but of course we've got to go to my parents and all, blah. It's not that things are terrible or miserable or there's fighting or there's something bad about the holiday. I just don't like it.
emilie and I watched some more BECK last night. I quite like that show! We tried to watch Neo-Tokyo, but I think I might end up watching that one myself. It's a bit, not like the normal anime we watch. We also watched some of the new Bam Margera movie, hilarious as usual. I actually will probably finish it up after this entry. I'm also planning on picking out another anime series to watch on my iPod (when I'm on the bus and all).
Nothing going on tonight at all, just the way I like it. I might play some Call of Duty 4 or something, maybe loop again.
Not much else is new. I'm looking to get more work, whether it be at the University or consulting, but I think I might have to pick one or the other, and real soon. I've thought about doing a lot of things lately, such as returning to Wentworth, going to Japan, going into the Army or possibly the Airforce...I really have no idea...I might even sell my horse haha, I really don't know!
One thing I do know is that I am hungry :D I think I shall have some lunch! Yum!
