Things That Make Me Happy

I am feeling a little down lately, as I always do with the changing of the seasons (don't worry, getting help, all is as well as can be). So I am going to make a list of things that made me happy recently. There may be cute pictures and/or macros.

1) Vestal McIntyre signed my copies of Lake Overturn and You Are Not The One! *squees and flails like the shameless fangirl she is*

2) He also not only agreed with me re: Lambda fail but expressed our mutual objection to the fail much better than I ever could. God bless 'im. Also, everyone should read Lake Overturn.

3) I got my presentation for Proudian done in about a half hour. Which is about as long as it will take me to give it.

4) I rediscovered a couple of old favorite poets, namely Ely Shipley and Paul Zarzyski who are both awesome. Also, Paul Zarzyski liked one of my poems. Yes, this is win about three years old. No, I don't care.

5) Rosemary and Rue, the book I am reading now, is made of some serious awesome. I'm not sure how I feel about Toby's current situation, but the plot looks to be awesome and the prose is just fantastic.

6) I recently impulse-bought the following: 10 Things I Hate About You ("Someday you gonna get bitch-slapped, and I'm not gonna do a thing to stop it), Wild Wild West (EIGHTY-FOOT TARANTULA BITCHES), Maverick (Jodi Foster), An Elegant Madness by Venetia Murray (a book about high society in Regency England: both research and fun), the season 2 soundtrack of Battlestar Galactica (Bear McCreary is a Jedi Master), and Cursor's Fury (MAX). Also, I feel another impulse purchase coming on.

7) The season 2 soundtrack of Battlestar Galactica is not really an impulse purchase, because Borders gave me 5 bucks to spend on stuff. They made me do it. Through, like, mind-control, man.

8) I SOLD A STORY YEEEEEAH.

9) Elvis. Elvis is awesome.

10) SJA starts back up next Thursday! All my favorite TV shows are almost back! *hugs them allll* Though I am feeling sadly Doctor-less. That's okay. Sarah Jane and her badass will make it all better. Also, I can spend some time being a pervy Luke fancier. I miss being a pervy Luke fancier.

What's made you happy recently?

EDIT: 11) BEST ROOMMMATE EVER just brought me chocolate. When I take over the world I will give her Russia.

Fic: The UNIT Recruit's Handbook

Title: The UNIT Recruit's Handbook
Author: [info]tigerkat24
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Winifred Bambera/Ancelyn, the Master, the Rani, Lucy Saxon, the Tenth Doctor, Donna, the Sea Devils, UNIT in general
Rating: PG at most.
Summary: The zeroth law of UNIT: it always gets weirder.
Word Count: 1000
Original Story: The Unbearable Weirdness of Being UNIT, by biichan.
Notes: Remixing any of biichan's work is both an honor and completely terrifying. I hope I've done her justice. Beta'd by the incomparable eponymous_rose.

I am apparently on something of an "INCOME YAY" spree, because in the last three days I have purchased the following.

1) The Sarah Jane Adventures, Season 1. I adore this show in all its Doctor-Who-FOR-KIDZ glory. Plus, you know, Sarah Jane = made of win. She just is.

2) The Aztecs. A very, very early episode of Doctor Who, featuring the Doctor accidentally getting engaged, Susan being almost nowhere to be found, Ian in a very silly eagle suit and Barbara being more awesome than you. Old!Skool companions rock my socks in general.

3) Sense and Sensibility. The Emma Thompson version, thanks. It's faithful to the book in spirit and stars most of my favorite actors, namely Emma Thompson, Mr. Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Imogen Stubbs, Imelda Staunton, Alan Rickman, and Unexpected Hugh Laurie and Laurielet (or so I am told). The only one missing is Mark Sheppard. Oh, and Hugh Grant is in it, but I can get over that.

4) Battlestar Galactica: Razor. BECAUSE I WANTED IT, THAT'S WHY. Also, it has Lee being kinda cool for once and Young!Adama. Plus, you know, more Cain.

5) The Lion in Winter. It was five bucks, guys! Five bucks for Peter O'Toole! Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn and Anthony Hopkins being somewhat subpar but hey he was short on sleep and TIMOTHY DALTON omnomnom and basically I love it. So there.

6) ALL YOUR MIDDLEMAN DVDS ARE BELONG TO ME. \m/

Bye bye, income. It was nice knowing you.

ETA: My daddy took me to the bookstore. :D :D :D And every time my daddy takes me to the bookstore, he buys me books! *is daddy's little girl and not ashamed*

7) Sex With Kings, which is a wonderfully wonderful history book about kings' mistresses through the ages. I love it so. It's very funny and brilliantly researched, and less depressing than the sequel, Sex with the Queen.

8) Ciaphis Cain: Hero of the Imperium! It's a Warhammer novel, but I've had it recommended, so I read the first few pages. I got Miles Vorkosigan vibes off it from a mile off. So, I bought it. We'll see if the Miles-vibes hold.

Top Ten Things That Made Today Truly Terrific

Today has been a lovely wonderful day! Let me tell you all about it at great length.

1. I got paid! Moneys always makes me happy. It was a respectable amount, too.

2. Getting paid allowed me to buy many DVDs that I had been wanting. The first season of the Sarah Jane Adventures, the Aztecs (episode from the very first season of Doctor Who ever: features Ian in a very silly eagle suit and Barbara being awesome), the Emma Thompson version of Sense and Sensibility (FIVE BUCKS, y'all) and Razor.

3. This wonderful lady, who is a writer of excellent Doctor Who fanfiction and someone I very much admire, randomly friended me on LJ. I of course friended back and it led to gleeful thing number

4. biichan really really liked Listening, one of my favorites of my own fics, and recommended it to people. Which leads to gleeful thing number

5. SOMEBODY REMIXED LISTENING AND MADE IT EVEN MORE AWESOME OMG. It's beautiful now like it wasn't quite before. So much win. Read the amazing here and tell the mystery author how wonderful it is.

6. Watched Leverage with Sarah, which is always a wonderful pastime. Lacked only Pris.

7. NEW LEVERAGE EPISODE TODAY. I have not yet seen it, but I have faith that I will soon.

8. Sarah and I finally figured out a plot that sort of makes sense for this Regency monster. Only downside to this is that Olivia is depressingly normal, and Sarah and El are hard at work convincing me that this is not depressing at all.

9. I has Andes and Haribo gummy bears.

10. Cursor's Fury is exactly as awesome as advertised. Finding myself loving Lady Aquitane more than expected. Also totally think Lady Placidia is a Cordelia expy and am not afraid who knows it. Anyway, was reading this too.

In short, this was an awesome day. I hope yours was just as excellent.

OMG OMG YOU GUYS

YOU GUYS YOU GUYS YOU GUYS

Okay, so I did who_remix, right, and my offer to write a drabble for anyone who figures out which story was the one I wrote still stands, but that's not the point. So I did who_remix and the entire point of who_remix is that somebody takes one of your stories and writes their own take on it.

So somebody remixed "Listening."

AND IT IS SO FUCKING AMAZING OH MY GOD YOU GUYS.

It just blew me away. The language, the nods to the original story and to the even-more-original show, Johnny, the Doctor, the TARDIS, the shipping, Tegan, just every tiny little thing. I would not change a word of this story, guys. OH MY GOD SO AMAZING. SO AMAZING.

Go ye hence and read it. SO GOOD.

*flails like an idiot some more*

Various things

1) I have sparkly nails! :D :D :D

2) Working in a beauty supplies warehouse has made me realize that I don't actually care much about the paraphanalia of making women look really nice. Granted, I do love me my Long Term Relationship shampoo and conditioner, but that's because it makes my hair smell nice and feel wonderful. It doesn't actually do much for the looks. I also love my Burt's Bees cleansing stick, because it maketh the acne to leave, and my Burt's Bees honey lip balm for obvious reasons (I go to school in a desert, y'all. You need this stuff). But I don't really care much for beauty supplies when they are used purely for beauty purposes.

Except for nail polish. I do have a weakness for nail polish. Especially if it glitters.

3) Wrote my who_remix fic and sent it in, right in the nick of time. Stories start being posted tomorrow. Go and look, and if you can pinpoint mine, I will write you something ALL FOR YOU. Within a month. Really.

4) Meme!

Using only song names from one artist, cleverly answer these questions. Pass it on to at least 15 people and include me. You can't use the band I used. Try not to repeat a song title. It's a lot harder than you think! Repost as "my life according to (band name)"

O HAY LOOK A MEME

Post one or more sentences from each of your WIP's because if you do you might be magically inspired to finish them.

Hoo boy. )

There turned out to be so many that I ended up splitting them into fanfiction and original fiction. )

11 and 17 may actually end up being the same story. I'm still percolating that one.

Also, if you can guess the fandom for the fanfics, I will... I don't know, do something nice for you. Maybe write you a drabble. Be careful: some of the obvious ones are less obvious than they look. :D

Anyway, which ones intrigue? Any of them look like I'm wasting my time?

1) Okay, first things first: I have a job. Or so I believe. At any rate, I definitely have multiple money-making opportunities this week, all of which pay decently well, so I may actually be able to treat myself to seventh season of the X-files, which is the only one I don't have (since ninth season doesn't exist and all). It's only twenty bucks off Amazon, and I earned that today through editing. Go me.

2) Now, if only this blasted sore throat will go away. Fortunately, I do not appear to be sick; my voice merely appears to be in Bermuda or some other vacation hotspot. Thank goodness for the internet.

3) Coolest Baby Brother Ever has taken off on a two-week tour of the C&O canal, by bike. Because he can, idk. I feel so non-adventurous compared to him. At least I am making money?

4) Finished Red Seas Under Red Skies. ASLJSHFIUSGKJSFKSJDSLKJGNSG. Pris, we need to talk.

5) Upcoming: a long post about the New York trip, which was rocksome in the extreme (barring a few dramatics which have been taken care of), several posts on my shiny new blog, which you should be following, probably some flailing about how awesome Leverage is (which is very), and smug half-hints about what I'm writing for who_remix. Assuming it gets finished in time. Eh, deadline's nine days away and it's a minimum of 500 words, I'll be fine.

Things to Do:
1) outstanding posts on Clockwork Lullabye (like, now, self, sheesh)
2) write who_remix fic
3) app Maggie Mei over on Huria
4) bb posts
5) read about Jane Austen being awesome
6) bully FG folks some more (jk ilu)

Women I Admire

I finished reading a biography today, about the same time as Miss Cam sparked a new meme here after this fandom secret and this long discussion bordering on wank (randomly, I love how everyone pulled out their favorite female character icons in that thread). It was fortuitous timing, so now I'm going to tell y'all about women I admire, who may or may not be fictional. I'd stick with fictional women, but again, the biography. I do hope you'll talk about women you admire, too. I think we can't talk enough about women we admire.

I've restrained myself, with great difficulty, to one per fandom. )

Looking back at these women, and at the ones who didn't make the list (Zoe Washburn, Inara Serra, Dana Scully, Virginia Wolff, my Doctor Who gals), I can see a couple of trends. I tend to admire smart women, who can maintain strong and loving relationships, but neither quality is a deal-breaker if it's lacking (Kaylee, Karrin Murphy). I admire women who are women, not men with breasts. I admire women who aren't afraid or ashamed of their sexuality. I admire women who are more than competant, women who hold their own and demand respect. I admire exceptional women who aren't afraid to be exceptional.

I feel like today, most women and girls are afraid to be exceptional. I don't know why this is so, or why women get boxed into subordinate roles that they aren't comfortable with or happy in. I feel like every girl should know that she can be exceptional, and I feel like these woman are a good start.

In short, I admire exceptional women, and I have every intention of being one.

What women do you respect? Why do you respect them?

ETA: Honorh talks about the same thing here, and so does selenay936.

*boggles*

Soooo a while ago I wrote a Vorkosiverse fanfic entitled A Brother Is Born For Adversity. It's not great, not bad either, but not great. I had fun writing it, people seemed to have fun reading it, everything is good, and it faded off the radar, so I assumed that was that.

Apparently not.

Turns out someone translated it into Russian.

Yeah, I don't know.

In slightly less boggly news, Snark and Explosives was a runnerup for best Classic Who crossover in the Children of Time awards. So yay!

Without Absolute Evidence (1/?)

Anderyn on fandom_stocking gave me the excuse I needed to write this. All silliness can be blamed on me. Unexpected Plot should be blamed on my darling beta, Priscillie. Awesome should be directed to Anderyn. Thanks muchly!

Title: Without Absolute Evidence (1/?)

Spoilers: Through The Doctor Dances, for the Whoniverse, and through Barrayar for the Vorkosiverse. Fairly big spoilers for Barrayar, actually.
Rating: PG-13
Summary: "That is part of the pleasure of friendship: trusting without absolute evidence and then being rewarded for that trust." --David Shore
Part One: in which Jack Harkness gets arrested and meets an old friend.

Remind me how we got into this. )

two things

1) OMG Abigail said "such shenanigans!" in total seriousness. When you add that to Paul Giametti and Laura Linney and Stephen Dillane, and the utter shiptasticness, and the squee-inducing beginning of ep. 4 and end of ep. 3... yeah, this is officially my favorite miniseries ever. Sorry, Jane Eyre. Close second.

2) OMG DOCTOR WHO FANDOM. SHUT UP. We haven't even seen the kid in action yet and you're already hating? SHUT. UP. Gah. SHUT UP.

At least random_c on ihasatardis gets it. )

some things!

1) JanNoWriMo is actually going really well! I've written all two days thus far, and I've actually finished the @#&^ing novel. It just needs polishing, a go-over by my beta, and more polishing, and probably some more scenes, and then it is finished and can be sent to PUBLISHERS OMG AUGH.

2) JOHN ADAMS HBO SERIES OMG OMG OMG. I've only seen two episodes and it is so good omg. Not real thrilled with a couple of the actors, but they're mostly side characters, and Paul Giametti and Laura Linney are just AMAZING. So good, so so good, flailing, cannot speak. Add to the amazingness that somebody gave me a late and wonderful Yuletide stocking stuffer of John/Abigail fluff, and yes. FLAIL.

Comments on the new Doctor )

4) NOOOOO LORD HAROLD DO NOT SINK MY JANE AUSTEN/YOU UST SHIP. *plugs ears and goes "la la la la"* Oh well. If he does sink it I've always got my fallback: Jane Austen/Mark Twain (THEIR LOVE IS SO COMBATIVE).

5) I've been very theatre-y lately. A big post on this to follow, but in the last month or so I've seen (or been in) the Beckett shorts, Carmen, Spring Awakening, When Words are Not Enough, Legally Blonde, and Altar Boyz, with probably Doubt to follow. Also, I love my dear friend WEG (you may remember her from the Sweeney Todd post) and I am going to buy her a pony. More on that in the Altar Boyz post.

6) FINALLY FG OH MY GOD. I get the feeling that my group doesn't quite get that o hay, I'm leaving on the 17th for quite a long time and I would like this chapter FINISHED BY THEN OKAY.

7) To do today: swing by library, finish writing cards, GMpost on FG, watch the next episode of John Adams, title and finish the cracky crossover, and write some more stuff for fandom_stocking. Maybe also watch me some Nine.

Advent #1: The Doctor's Angels

Title: The Doctor's Angels
Fandom: Doctor Who
Spoilers: None to speak of.
Characters: The Brig, Sergeant Benton, and by mention the Doctor, Liz, Jo and Sarah Jane.
Rating: G

"The Doctor's angels," the Brigadier remarked, watching through the window as the Doctor tried to hug all three of them simultaneously, with a remarkable amount of success.

Benton, beside him, blinked, and stared, and tried not to comment.

After a moment of this, the Brigadier asked in an irritated tone, "What? You haven't seen Charlie's Angels?"

"I've seen Charlie's Angels," Benton replied, and searched for a diplomatic way of putting it. Finding none, he continued, "I'm just trying to wrap my head around the notion of you having seen Charlie's Angels. Sir."

The Brigadier harrumphed, and proceeded to ignore him.
